Contemporary Brazilian painting and printmaking

When speaking of Brazilian contemporary art in
general. and painting in particular. the ·meltingpot'
cliche is unavoidable. Artists from Italy. Japan. Hungary.
Poland. Germany. Spain. and many parts of the world.
are producing what is called Brazilian art. This may be
the reason why Brazilian art as a whole does not possess
well-defined characteristics. but only a number of
rather good artists. The next generation will probably
produce some important changes. and acquire many
stronger characteristics. Brazilian art does not reflect
a struggle between various tendencies. nor are any of
the existing tendencies too strongly represented. Unlike
a country like the Argentine. Brazil is not particularly
eager to be ·a la page.· Pop Art is only beginning to
appear. the youngest generation shows greater concern
in the very latest trends-but it is a very smal I generation.
if one considers only its gifted members.
It is not my belief that in the international field of
painting there is much in Brazil that is of very great
interest. But it is my belief that in printmaking Brazil
can compete with any country, and in a short time the
same should apply to painting. ■
