                                                                                does this is not entirely concealed. for one can always
                                                                                 sense  the  artist's  awareness  of  the  phantasy  of  the
                                                                                 external  world.  Vera  Pagava  insists  on  the  essential
                                                                                 solitude of  each  object in her still-lites and  then  pro­
                                                                                 vides the opposite effect in collective compositions and
                                                                                 collections of forms-either with human figures.  as in
                                                                                her battle-scenes. or with houses. as in her townscapes.
                                                                                 Avigdor Arikha enables us to follow a symbolic life of
                                                                                 the  soul-the  life  that  runs  through  the  whole  of  this
                                                                                 collection.  His initial. severe expressionism-verging on
                                                                                 caricature-has remained only in his violent rhythms. for
                                                                                 his later work is abstract. though still suggestive of the
                                                                                 human  element  and  still  issuing  from  an  emotionally
                                                                                 selected  palette.  The  art  of  Francis  Bott  seeks  for  a
                                                                                 certain  purity.  the intellectual  content of  which  works
                                                                                 upon the mechanism of the sensibility in a manner that
                                                                                 recalls  the  poetry  of  Mallarme.
                                                                                  Besides  these  few.  some  other  artists  are  less  per­
                                                                                 manently represented  in  this collection.  although they
                                                                                 are chosen with sincere admiration.  Here. too. one can
                                                                                 easily  perceive  the  sentimental  feelings  that  have
                                                                                 occasioned  the  choice.  Balthus-in  the  works  in  this
                                                                                 collection-is less disturbing. but no less serious than
                                                                                 elsewhere.  Geer Van Veld attains an extreme refinement
                                                                                 of expression.  Lesieur. Cottavoz.  Music  and  Hundert-
