sometimes it is closer to painting where neither phrases,
words nor letters can be deciphered and simply create
an abstract pattern (Franz Mon, Ferdinand Kriwet, John
Furnival). When the poem is purely phonetic it comes
closest to music (Bernard Heidsieck, Henri Chopin).
Occasionally concrete poetry relates almost equally to
the visual, semantic and phonetic possibilities (Ernst
Jandl, Hansjörg Mayer, Max Bense). It would be
difficult, however, to plot an exact graph and decide
precisely where each concrete poem belongs in
relation to art, literature, and music; and as for the
concrete poets themselves, it is almost impossible to
group them with any degree of accuracy since their
work has considerable variety.
One can consider concrete poetry from yet another
angle. In his book Physics and Philosophy, Werner
Heisenberg wrote: 'Equality and inequality, repetition
and symmetry, certain group structures, play the funda-
