A limited edition of 75 lithographs by Erté, numbered and signed, 25+ x 19+ in., is on exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery until December 31.
Erté's style is often mistakenly called Art Nouveau, but in fact Art Nouveau was in vogue in the 1890s and his style, Art Deco, became
popular after the first quarter of the century. Like Art Nouveau, Art Deco is highly ornamental surface decoration based on the sinuous line, but
influenced as it was by the Bauhaus its lines are purer, its angles more clearly delineated, than those of Art Nouveau, which Erté himself calls
'spaghetti art'.
