From life
Artists who work from life have suffered from some
unjustified neglect in recent years, and an exhibition in
January at the Camden Arts Centre, London, entitled
`From Life', attempted to redress this. It brought together
work by a number of British artists who work from the
model— William Coldstream, Francis Hoyland, Philip
Sutton, Euan Uglow, Cliff Holden, Patrick George, and
Adrian Stokes among them— and the paintings and
sculpture shown demonstrated the strong, persisting
influence of William Coldstream' s sensitive treatment of
the model, of David Bomberg, of the classicism of
Karel Vogel (who came to London as a refugee in 1939
and died here in 1961), and of Frank Auerback and
Euan Uglow Three in one 1967, oil on canvas,
24 x 30 in.
Leon Kossof. The works by Euan Uglow, Anthony
Hatwell and Ivor Abrahams illustrated on these two pages
were included in the exhibition.
Euan Uglow is representative of a group of artists who
`have grown from the influence of William Coldstream.
The painting...made from a polyhedron shows how
geometry concerns him. He regards the figure as he regards

Anthony Hatwell is the only sculptor to have worked
under Bomberg, and in 1958 was an assistant to Henry
Moore.
Ivor Abrahams studied under Karel Vogel at Camberwell
School of Art.
