Ain't Freedom Grand 1971. Screenprint, 20 x 28 in.
The title to this screenprint comes from a poem by
e. e. cummings on war memorials. The couple in the
foreground were originally photographed in front of a
war memorial in Vienna, but the monument in the
print has been substituted by a monument made
from children's building blocks. The combination of
the disparate with a simple literary connection
provides its cool tension. The print is a collage of the
two elements.
Furnished Accommodation 1969. Acrylic on canvas,
64 x 62 in.
This painting illustrates the quality of light on a
familiar object normally considered ugly. Living
with furniture and wallpapers in furnished
accommodation can be a nightmare, yet to the artist
this object represented the oppressive image of an
altar with a strong sculptural life of its own.
Down at First Street Bridge 1971. Gouache,
22 X 3o in.
The image of the artist has been used twice, with a
child and a salmon, against a Giotto landscape from
which the original figures have been removed, to be
substituted by modern images in contemporary
clothing. This painting was designed for a
screenprint, in an edition of 75.
