least with the stretcher—Larry Zox, who looked best to
me, with Will Insel as runner-up. Not much, beyond the
kind of optical trickery much en vogue now, can be
done with these formats which add little to the
imaginery.
With 'Start' the Gallery Lefebre offers the work of
seven relatively young and certainly little known
painters from other countries (at least little known here).
The most mature statements have already been
properly acknowledged elsewhere, as in the case of
Antonio Segui, the Argentine painter now well watched
in Paris. Segui's mordant spoof of former Spanish
modes is considerably more sophisticated than the
Mexican Alberto Gironella's. The latter devotes his
considerable painting technique to a commentary on
Velasquez, presumably satirical but slightly marred by
his over elegant technique.
Among the others, I was impressed with the expres-
sionist fantasy of Horst Antes, a young German of
Antonio Segui notable talent, and the extension of Dubuffet offered
