Rufino Tamayo, born 1889, continues to paint in the
imagery of his native Zapotec Indian heritage refined
and enlarged by his study and immersion in the worlds
of Mexico and Paris. Nothing primitive but the associa
tion of birds, animals and masks find their way through
the high keyed colours of his luminous oils where
j
fantasy and carnival oin hands in paintings that have
the overall integration of frescoes where each area
counts against another.
Until December at the Galerie Semi ha Huber, Zurich, the
Mexican artist is showing twenty recent oil paintings of
which three are reproduced. They represent a consistency
and strength that merit further exhibition elsewhere.
