based on these factors and had to contain a nucleus of
these earliest non-representational works of art, starting
with Kandinsky's dynamic dissolution of the object,
the Rayonism of Larinov, the Orphism of Delaunay and
Kupka, the Neo-Plasticism of Mondrian, the Suprema
tism of Malevitch, the collages of Schwitters, the
Bauhaus Constructivists, etc.
What is your reaction to the further development up to
the most recent art?
The development of the last 40 years affirms non
representational art. All over the world, most artists
have accepted the new aesthetics of artistic expression,
have enlarged upon it and have striven to discover new
forms of expression. The young generation have
constantly uncovered new qualities and new processes.
It is true that time and again a return to representational
art was predicted. But these attempts were cut short
from the start, as in each instance they represented no
more than reminiscences of earlier styles. It was no
longer sufficient to paint in the, grand manner. Perhaps
we shall have to abandon altogether the concept of
'art' in its traditional sense and expand our world of
ideas in respect of artistic expression It is sometimes
said that the time for Divine Service and for Art is no
more. On the contrary, I am of the opinion that we have
already attained a new level in all spheres which, how
ever, has by no means yet been fully absorbed into the
consciousness of man. The development of the past
1 ten years vividly shows the new realms which are being
