GERARD HEMSWORTH. Once I model up
a shape I feel bound to respect its existence
as stuff, the same way a child accepts the
limitations of play-bricks. Unlike a child,
I am able to remodel, until satisfied with my
statement, sculpture. (Thereness.)

PETER HIDE. I Wish to avoid making any
references to my sculptures, as I feel that
word statements about a purely visual
phenomenon can be, and often are, extremely
misleading, especially when written by the
artist himself.
Having said this, I will therefore confine
myself to why I work at Stockwell. Firstly,
the size of Stockwell gives me the freedom to
make and exhibit a type of sculpture which
in the normal present-day circumstances I
could not even consider. Secondly, working
and exhibiting as a group has special
advantages in that it generates a critical and
competitive atmosphere. Thirdly, for young
artists exhibiting as a group, especially at
Stockwell, is more meaningful and effective
in terms of communication than exhibiting
in isolation.
