Michael Upton's drawing
A selection described by Patrick Procktor
Michael Upton's drawings are being
exhibited at the Piccadilly Gallery, Cork
Street, London, from August 2 to August
27. The drawings are all of architectural
interiors and exteriors, made during the
past year. Those reproduced here are of
rooms.
The room in the first drawing is completely
invented. Perspective and light have been
employed to create a fastidious illusion.
In the room, though, the furniture—light
fittings, table legs, two gramophone pick-
ups—have been fragmented, distorted out
of scale and placed in a contradictory
perspective. The eye is brought back
deliberately from the illusion of the room
to the reality of the drawing.

From the invented room we pass into the
invented bedroom. The series of discs in
centre is 'a section of a bed'—to me
unrecognizable. The artist has made his
bed, let him lie in it. Each fragment of each
piece of furniture is in a separate perspec-
tive. At right there is a bit of a leather chair
floating towards the ceiling. In this
drawing the subject is reduced to a starting
point, the final effect is non-objective.
Like Ozymandias, 'nothing beside
remains'—except the fastidiousness.
