                                                                                    purely by chance and were used in a similar way in the Adenauer
                                 'The work possibly took form this way: there are a number of   portrait of the following year.'
                                 fountains and "sources" near our house in France, and on my
                                 walks they seemed to hold, perhaps, more than their natural
                                 significance. Some were man-made, some natural, and some
                                 natural but aided by man. I made some notes and the forms
                                 began to take on a shape quite unlike the original subject. At
                                 this time I found a small and most curious organic object, and
                                 the impression of this joined with my other thoughts on the idea.
                                 The idea of water had started before in France, and was greatly
                                 rekindled in Venice about four years ago with the pipe reflected
