Dessin 1966, 21 x 15 in., by Jean Bazaine at Maeght,
13 Rue de Téhéran, Paris through March. The show
consists of drawings, watercolours and gouaches
by this artist. Jean Bazaine, born in 1904, took part
in the exhibition organized in 1941 at the Galerie
Braun by André Lhote called 'Young painters in the
French tradition', with Pignon, Manessier, Estève,
etc, who figured again in the Salon d'Automne in
1944. The styles of the artists ranged from figurative to
cubist but they were united by their rebellion against
the Occupation government. At one time, Bazaine
worked, as did several of his contemporaries such
as Rouault, Braque and Manessier, in stained-glass
and mosaics. He completed commissions for
churches at Assy (1950), Audincourt (1951), and for
the UNESCO building in Paris. In 1948 he
published a book Notes sur la peinture d'aujourd'hui,
which went into a second edition in 1953.
