The Paris Brennial Exhibition at the Museum of Art
was preceded by an exhibition at the Musee Galliera.
entitled 'Promesses Tenues·. This may be termed as a
protest against the much criticised. straggling Paris
Biennial Exhibition of untenable works by artists whose
age is strictly limited from twenty to thirty-five years.
Monsieur Heron de Villefosse, curator of the Musee
Ga//iera. has seen fit to make a 'rejustification· by
organising this show of some sixty works by more
experienced and talented artists. aged from thirty-five
to sixty years.
The Exhibition at the Musee Galliera. even if it is
much more restricted than that of the Paris Biennial, is
certainly more significant as compared to the enormous
and ambitious display at the Museum of Modern Art.
None the less. the entire show at the M usee Galliera is
devoted to non-figurative art. However. there are here
works of considerable interest.
Simon Hantai (born 1922 in Hungary) exhibits an
abstract oil painting on paper which I find a powerful
embodiment of quasi-surrealist expression.
John Levee (born 1924 in Los Angeles) shows a
typical example of painting by the New York School
of Abstraction.
Jean Paul Riopelle (born 1924 in Montreal) has a
canvas which is so heavily laden with impasto. that one
feels it is about to crash to the floor!
Huguette-Arthur Bertrand (born 1925 at Ecouen)
shows an attractive and original canvas of marked
plastic qualities. entitled Fortune de Mer.
Andre Marfaing (born 1925 in Toulouse) remains an
exponent of Action Painting (otherwise known in
France as · Tachisme'); he gives no title to his com
position which is simply splashed black paint on white
canvas.
Aldine (born 1917 in Cairo) exhibits an abstract.
fascinating. out-of-this-world composition entitled
Le Monde des Illusions.
One of the central pieces on show at the Musee
Galliera is by Georges Mathieu (born 1921 in Boulogne
sur-mer). This abstract expressionist. who has a great
admiration for the likewise abstract painting of the
Japanese. soon is going to have an important exhibition
of his latest outsize canvases at the Gallery Charpen
tier. Typical of his enigmatic work which he executes
with remarkable speed. he entitles Celebration du
