TWELVE
Face Tract: work in progress, 1971-72: 16mm black and
white film, current length 5 mins, and a series of 35mm
black and white transparencies projected on top of the film
projection. This is an autobiographical work: the 16mm
footage consists of a visual text spelt out partly letter by
letter, partly word by word, which is intercut with a series
of shots of my face and the back of my head; this footage is
juxtaposed with transparencies of me from babyhood to the
present day, photos taken from the family snaps album.
THIRTEEN
Ideal Home: work in progress, 1971-72.35mm colour trans-
parencies and 16mm colour footage projected double-
screen. The 16mm footage is a series of takes of suburban
domestic interiors with the 'woman (or women) of the
house' moving in and around those interiors. The transpar-
encies are taken from three sources, intermingled: (1) a
series taken from a set of litho colour separation sheets
(one colour through to four) of housewives in domestic
interiors; (2) a series taken at the Ideal Home Exhibition,
Olympia 1972; (3) a series of toned 'porno-pics' taken in
domestic interiors. The twin-screen projection with the
two screen areas touching creates alternating tension/
continuity of space/colour/imagery when the projected
figures in interiors are juxtaposed.
FOURTEEN
I continue to make static works which are shown in galleries,
and which have obvious similarities with the 16mm films
and transparency-sequences: use of a camera; sequential
imagery; juxtaposition of word and image, etc.
Some things I can best express physically, some things by
speech, other things turn out as sequences of photographs,
photo-texts, video, tape-recordings, dialogues, writings,
performances, transparency-sequences, or films. All are
part of the same activity: living from day to day. E
