The shadows' abstraction upon the meadow carries some mathematical sense
It took half a year to discover that I had to
make the sculpture myself. With the valuable
assistance of Andy Elton and Roger Moss the
piece was delivered on time. The environs of
The Mill appealed to me like any visitor to
Cambridge. The work undertaken was to be
manifestly visual, very much to do with the
eye, the site, and the seasonal scenario; the
storm came later, before the light of summer
had a chance to play on the surfaces of shape, to
dry to a husk the sadness of a hard winter.
Cambridge is a remarkable place, a world
village spider with antennae instead of legs. If a
picture is worth a thousand words, a sculpture
is worth five hundred column inches. Mutual
shock sustained. q
