The sculptor should be involved in the
architectural planning from the beginning
and not be called on at the end to add an
artistic accent. The actual creating of spaces
and also of spaces that ask for sculpture, is more
important than the sculpture itself. On the
premise that a space provides this point of focus
where the presence of a sculpture becomes
evident, the sculpture has to correspond only
in terms of size. The impact of a sculpture in
the City should be instantaneous, on a blatant
and obvious level, it should be obtrusive so as
to capture the attention of the passing public.

The Laing Art Gallery wall was a vital incentive
for the position and conception of my sculpture.
In order to create a meaningful environment for
the sculpture, which in turn provides a focal
point for the Laing Art Gallery, I had to
redesign the shapes of the grass-beds. q
