The work reproduced here, called Meditation
Space, was realized in June 1974 in the
Middelheim Park at Antwerp, on the occasion of
the first Belgian sculpture biennale. The work,
origins can be traced back to a white marble
4
piece of 1960 composed of one segment of a
cylinder with one planar section and one
profiled section, the latter conjoining exactly
the profiled section of a second cylinder. An
intermediary piece fitting exactly the profiled
sections of both cylinders can be intercalated.
This element, which can be perfectly
adjusted into each cylinder creates a 'meditation
space' for me which evokes both the positive
and the negative, the shadow and the light, the
straight and the curved, the hollow and the
mound, the convex and the concave, the hot
and the cold. My work at Middelheim is the
result of these ideas; but realized on a different
scale on a huge square lawn. It illustrates the
same principles of geometrical completion, at
the same time evoking in the spectator all the
existential resonances which, in my eyes, can be
found there.
