One of the characteristics of contemporary art
         is that the contents of the work is of a
         dialectic nature and there exists an interaction
         between the work and its surroundings.
           It is symptomatic that the relation between
         the individual shapes and their totality,
         between the actual parts and the entire picture
         are always relevant to Rubens's work.
           The small pictures, perfect visual objects in
         a living room, require space. Their forms are
         completely linked with their content and
         create a sense of balance, rhythm and an
         illusion of reality. The same pictures, enlarged
         twenty times on a three dimensional scale,
         stand out on their own, black and white as
