departure in landscape painting. Above the static fore
ground of the earth's surface divided in parallel tracts
running into the vanishing point on the horizon and
punctuated with masts, ditches, fences and buildings,
the sky becomes alive with the dancing figures traced
in the shadowy lineaments of the clouds' blues, rain
moisture rendered transparent against the firmament
beyond. This sense of drama becomes the more com
pelling, because of its contrast between the real and the
impalpable, the solid and the transparent, ar:id empha
sizes the internal conflict of forces that generates the
tension in the most successful of Hultberg's paintings.
