Christo Valley Curtain 1971-72, nylon polyamide and steel cables 185-365 ft high,
span 1,25o ft. Although the piece suffered from accelerated expendability, its
colossal scale is a realization of Piranesi, by means of technology.
Richard Serra Untitled, stone (3 walls), steel (i wall). Size to be determined by
elevation of the land. Mock-up of site at Inwood Park. The work will involve the
elevational fall of the land over a given area. The idea has to do with establishing
elevational steps which find their location at the shortest contour intervals, i.e. the
steepest inclines or fall of the land over a given distance. If of stone, the rectangles
will be made of stone collected in and around the park. The photo depicts the
basic idea of the work whether it is constructed in one part, three parts, of steel or Barnett Newman Broken Obelisk 1963-67, corten steel, 25 ft Jain. x 10 ft 6in. x
stone. 10 ft 6in. Institute of Religion and Human Development, Houston, Texas.
Peter Gourfain Untitled, oak beams, 7 ft x 5o ft x 5o ft. Battery Park, New York.
Quite incidental to the original conception, this sculpture seems to invite people
who wish to climb and sit on it. In my opinion this activity improves its connection
with and relation to those who live around it and enjoy it.
