LEGEND 2 Legend
The illustrations on this page are from the two-
volume book 'Legend' by Daniel Buren
published this January by Warehouse
Publications, London, with texts in English,
French, German, Spanish, Italian and
Japanese. The book comprises a total of over
200 photographs of Paris metro stations. Half of
these were taken during the last week of 1970,
and Daniel Buren writes that : 'Each
photograph is centred on a billboard and in the
upper right-hand corner of each billboard
vertical white and coloured (blue) stripes are
noticeable. The pieces of white and blue
vertically-striped paper put up/pasted in this
way were a pretext for Michel Cenet's
photographs.
'The pasting-up which covered over 130
metro stations and was visible during the last
week of March 197o, was done on the occasion
of the 18 Paris IV 70 exhibition, but outside its
spatial and temporal limits.' The second volume
presents the work anew, photographed in June
1973, but with orange-striped paper.
